General Description


As an Availity User Experience Designer you are responsible for analyzing and improving any interaction that customers have in order to enhance the user experience of the enterprise’s products and services. Your primary goal is to improve the usability, usefulness and overall appeal of the enterprise site by collaborating with the product team, scrum team, customer-facing teams, and the end users. In this role, your key areas of responsibility range from design of the web to full user experience design for EDI, paper, and internal support processes. Finally, the role evangelizes the benefits of User Experience Design across the enterprise, facilitates brainstorming discussions to improve existing experiences, and trains other teams on design principles and user research basics, allowing other groups across the enterprise the opportunity to embrace the user experience mindset when solving for specific business needs. This position requires an intimate understanding of the customer and the market as well as a strong passion for the user experience. To be successful, you must possess innovative ideas and methods of doing things, deep understanding and strong commitment to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external stakeholders, and results-driven.

Key Responsibilities 


Own the end to end user experience
  • Responsible for the design, development and maintenance of web pages and web page content for Availity. 
  • Work closely with clients to identify, interpret and develop web content, web design requirements, and visual deliverables in order to meet specific business needs
  • Seek to improve the usability, usefulness, navigation and overall appeal of the enterprise site by coordinating with the product team, development team, and end users
  • Work with the company’s product management and scrum teams to understand and resolve user interface issues, and make final determination on designs, including development and oversight of web application prototypes that can be used in a production environment
  • Take ownership of the end to end user experience for the consumption and access to our SaaS applications (legacy portals and apps)
  • Conduct/facilitate user research, define customer personas, map customer flows, evaluate current experiences (usability testing, metrics, etc.), examines interactions and identifies areas for improvement
  • Desire to excel as a team, not an individual
  • Interpret and take initiative on a design direction with minimal managerial oversight
  • Assist the User Experience Manager or Senior User Experience Designer with teaching individuals and groups basic user research methods and design principles
  • Participate in the development and communication of the user design process for a given project


Facilitate user research
  • Gather appropriate details from or about customers to thoroughly understand their needs 
  • Consistently solicit user input and observes users in their own work setting
  • Glean insights about user behavior from analytics data, and uses it to improve the user experience
  • Validate the effectiveness of designs through research and usability studies (i.e. A/B testing, surveys, usability testing)
  • Develop and executes usability test plans to ensure web pages adhere to usability practices
  • Synthesize research findings into meaningful recommendations and actionable results, communicating them in a consumable way
  • Work closely with customer facing representatives (MDRs and CAMs) to solicit user feedback candidates

Create prototypes and storyboards

  • Develop and execute usability test plans to ensure web pages adhere to usability practices.
  • Create production quality web pages to be used in a Java application
  • Assist in the design, development and implementation of usability testing practices and user interface best practices
  • Develop conceptual design theme and translate ideas into a rich HTML UI
  • Provide input to and enforcing design guidelines and best practices
  • Keep current on new technology. Assess new standards, technologies and trends to formulate strategies for enhancing websites
  • Assist Product Management in the creation of mock implementations of static HTML for new products
  • Assist Product Management in resolving user interface issues
  • Use photographic library to grab images and integrate into the web design
  • Create prototypes and storyboards for new functionality, new interaction models, and proofs of concept, applying user centered design (UCD) principles
  • Incorporate current graphic design concepts, software and technology, interaction design concepts, and web design principles
  • Use prototypes to illustrate a service or application and to collect user feedback

Train other groups in user research and basic design principles

  • Participate in presentations related to User Experience topics 
  • Create and delivers presentations on user research and basic design principles, which include actionable next steps for the audience
  • Review designs created independently by Product Owners, and gives constructive feedback where needed



  • Three (3+) plus years of web design work
  • A compelling portfolio of past design work
  • Extensive knowledge of modern CSS, JavaScript, HTML languages and uses, prototype and scripting libraries
  • Understands code optimization
  • Experience interacting directly with end users to solicit feedback
  • Experience training and giving presentations

Tools of Trade: Previous experience using

  • Photoshop
  • Illustrator
  • Any Wire framing tool (i.e. Balsamiq)
  • Visio or other storyboarding tool
  • A/B testing program
  • Analytics programs


  • Experience developing complex graphical appearance and navigation strategies
  • Prototype and scripting libraries
  • A compelling portfolio of past design work
  • Experience working in an Agile and/or iterative development environment
  • Experience working in an entrepreneurial company or entrepreneurial environment 
  • Experience conducting usability tests (creating, recruiting, facilitating, and reporting results)
  • Experience working with web analytics tools and forming actionable results
  • Previous employment in the healthcare industry


  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Art, Computer Science, or related discipline, or bachelor’s degree in any field with equivalent graphic or interaction design experience
  • NOTE: 2 -4 years of relevant work experience may serve as an equivalent for the bachelor’s degree.


  • Professional Credentials in Healthcare (HIMSS, MPH, MHA, etc.)
